Kilsby plays pivotal role in securing Clarks acquisition

Newport-based Clarks Natural Sweeteners has been acquired by Hain Daniels following continued support from accountancy and tax experts Kilsby Williams.

Established in 2008 by Bob Clark, Clarks became the biggest producer and supplier of maple syrup in the UK, and has since expanded the range of natural sweeteners to include honey and carob, date and agave syrups, which are sold in leading retailers and used by food service and industrial customers across the country.

The major deal with the UK subsidiary of US-based food group Hain Celestial Inc. will deliver extra investment to help drive and expand the brand, which last year generated approximately £7 million in net sales.

Kilsby Williams has worked closely with the syrup giant since 2012 helping to secure a Welsh Government grant the following year which enabled Clarks to double the size of its operating base in Wales as part of a £500,000 expansion programme. The latest deal saw Kilsby provide clear, strategic advice, taxation support and assistance in terms of price negotiations.

Managing Partner at Kilsby Williams, Simon Tee, said: “We are thrilled for Clarks that this significant deal has come to fruition and we are delighted to have been involved. Supporting them and ensuring they secured the best deal for everyone was paramount.

“Bob has built the business up from scratch and worked tirelessly to make it one of the leading food businesses here in the UK. The new deal will enable more opportunities across continental Europe and increase the growth potential substantially and we wish them the best of luck.”

Bob Clark, founder and Managing Director at Clarks: “Simon and the Kilsby Williams team have done an exemplary job for our business over the years and played a major role in helping us achieve this deal with Hain Celestial.

“This is a significant milestone for Clarks Natural Sweeteners and will deliver extra investment to help drive and expand the brand.

“We’re very much looking forward to working with the Hain Daniels team to continue our growth in new and existing customers.”

Hain Celestial – a leading organic and natural products company and owner of Ella’s Kitchen, Linda McCartney Foods and Gale’s Honey – has sites in the US, UK, Canada, Belgium, France, Germany and Austria.

James Skidmore, Hain Daniels Chief Executive Officer, added, “I welcome our new colleagues within Clarks to the business and see significant opportunities to further develop the natural sweeteners category. The strength of the Clarks brand puts it in a strong position to capitalize on the growing consumer trends towards more natural and healthier foods.”
